Abstract
Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) play a vital
role in the economic development of Muscat and Oman at large. As digital
transformation continues to reshape business operations globally, digital
accounting solutions (DAS) are increasingly essential for improving financial
accuracy, compliance, and decision-making efficiency. This study aims to assess
the level of awareness and adoption of digital accounting solutions among SMEs
in Muscat. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining quantitative
surveys and qualitative interviews with SME owners, managers, and accounting
personnel across various sectors. The findings reveal that while a significant
portion of SMEs recognize the potential benefits of digital accounting
tools—such as real-time data access, automation of routine tasks, and improved
financial reporting—many still lack sufficient knowledge, training, or
resources to implement these systems effectively. Key barriers identified
include limited IT infrastructure, perceived high costs, and resistance to
change. Moreover, the study highlights a gap between awareness and actual
usage, suggesting the need for targeted governmental and institutional support,
including training initiatives and financial incentives, to encourage wider
adoption. By understanding current awareness levels and challenges, this
research provides insights for policymakers, software providers, and business
support organizations aiming to foster digital transformation among SMEs in
Muscat.
